I am Laura Zeisler LCSW, ATR-BC and after 20 years in a successful career as an Art Therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker listening to cancer survivors, cancer patients and teaching Art in a pediatric oncology unit, I was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma. To survive this diagnosis, I turned to my professional knowledge combined with my clients' wisdom and cancer-related choices. Combing both my expertise and their wisdom – I determined my own best cancer treatment options by maneuvering the emotional fog of fear and calming the "Am I making the right cancer treatment choices?" mantra that swirled daily in my head. I was also able to ask my integrated medical team life-altering questions and to reduce caregiver stress amongst my family and friends. (Who were really incredible, and said "the how" of my cancer disclosure really did help.)
Since I have successfully navigated cancer myself, I know the challenges, rewards and possibilities of a cancer diagnosis and the journey into being a thriving cancer survivor. I also found meaning and purpose by using art and therapeutic writing to help me survive cancer. Here is a glimpse from my upcoming book –
Notes of a Cancer Survivor
In my parent's house I had the greatest hiding spot ever. It was so fabulous even now I hesitate to disclose it. Okay, it was on the top shelf of the linen closet hiding under a blanket, which I neatly tucked between myself and the door. No one ever saw me, even when they flung open the door. I am an admirable hide and seek player. I put this skill in the present tense even though I have not played in about 35 years. I am vaguely aware my current size may hinder my skill – but just a bit. As a child I would frequently play this game on warm summer evenings. Sometimes, we played my favorite version called Sardines. We played this and other games which covered the neighborhood, until frost moved us indoors.
I stood again before this hiding spot a week after my surgery in which the doctors removed a malignant tumor. With it they took half my kidney. I went seeking warmth, and to balance the cold truth of a vital organ harvest. As I stood in front of the folded blankets reminiscent of my childhood, I realized I don't have any body memories of losing my smallness. So to know wholeness, I took a moment, closed my eyes and tried to commit to memory having all my organs.
Together you will discover tools of empowerment, compassionate support, and transformational mindset techniques that will help you heal. By encouraging, educating and supporting you as you move through your cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment and/or transitioning from surviving to thriving as a cancer survivor, I will guide you through the cancer journey.
I designed this unique and effective system for you by listening and responding to the needs of cancer patients and cancer survivors. I included evidence-based practices into a step-by-step guide and individualized coaching program that transforms cancer challenges into solutions and helps you discover your life's meaning and purpose.
I am incredibly inspired and ready to support you and those you love on your cancer journey.
